This is the death trap of high performance, where dreams go to die. So you’ve got this big goal that requires multiple steps over an extended period of time. It all seems so overwhelming, so you become paralyzed and never begin. This is emotional overwhelm, and there are so many examples of how this phenomenon derails even the most mentally tough performers. COVID-19 was an example of a mass event that shut down the world, leaving billions of people frozen in fear and unable to move forward. The retirement crisis is another example. Millions of retirees in the United States have insufficient funds to last the rest of their lives. The generation after them sees how much money they will need and becomes overwhelmed thinking about how they’re going to amass this fortune in their current occupation: The result: emotional overwhelm, leading to inaction. Mentally tough performers are well aware of the threat of emotional overwhelm and prepare themselves to counter it through critical thinking. In this episode of the Mental Toughness Podcast, we explore the dangers of this phenomenon and how to overcome it. #mentaltoughness #personaldevelopment #emotionaloverwhelm #criticalthinking
