Fox Business Network called a few days ago and asked me to appear on Varney & Company to talk about why the wealthy continue to work. One of the biggest reasons is they are having fun. How about you? On a scale of 1-7, 7 being a blast and 1 being you hate your life, where would you rate yourself?  Watch this short post I taped today at our house on lake Lanier and I’ll look forward to your comments.

  1. Like Tom, I also am at a 0 at work, a 7 in my faith and family, and used to feel exactly as he described. That is until I partnered with some very wise and wealthy folks who are helping me make changes to allow me to do the wonderful things the others described in their responses.

Thanks, Steve, for this blog and How Rich People Think. See you on Linkedin.

  2. James Michener quote, “The Master in the Art of Living”….look it up!

There is magic in that quote….BUT….it starts with you and your mental attitude.

I work every day to be that master, the master of me.

Good luck to you…it is attainable.

  3. I would like to say that I’m a 7…but I’m more of a 5. I enjoy and love the possibilities and drive in becoming a 7. The journey is great, but the reality is that I’m still work in progress… I’m not where I want to be, not what I’m going to be, but thank God I’m not where I used to be which was below 5. Thanks for your inspiration Steve!

  4. I rate about 0.
I hate my job as a professional aviator, and feel like it’s a chain around my neck. I love flying, but I have no passion for the job. We are regulated and procedured to death; there’s no creativity, and procedure in “the manual” now takes precedent over good judgement and common sense.

Steve I remember what you said long ago about Kunta Kinte from ‘Roots’ . Like Kunta I’m always dreaming about escaping and trying to find a chance. But after more than a decade and a half at my demanding and risky job, freedom seems as vaporous as ever.. I’m not having much fun, or doing anything I really want to, and spend lots of time away from my home and family for the job…

It would be easier to have fun doing something for the passion if we didn’t have to worry about paying the bills each month. How many people could be great writers, artists, business creators, or inventors if they could set themselves free?

Across the road from the airport where I work, I was eyeballing a piece of property that was for sale and thinking, “that would be a great place for putting up a new hotel”. Guess what? There’s a new hotel now going up there, but it’s not me building it!! Now every time I see that construction going on I’m livid about it… I know the person (their company) who is building that is likely stamping them out like Christmas cookies… Oh and they were probably at home on Christmas with their family while I was at work.

I’ve heard the message from many motivational and self improvement speakers about stepping out, and taking the chance to do something you are passionate about. Ok, I get that… How though, do we bridge the gap? If I say good-bye to my employer how do I pay the mortgage and put food on the table while working for 1, 2, 3 years or more to become successful at the things I can’t stop thinking and dreaming about??

One local guy I know who owns several businesses says to work at it part time till you can’t afford to keep your job anymore. Really? My job eats up so much of my life I feel like I barely have time to catch up on rest and spend time with my wife and family; before I know it, it’s time to head back to work, where I spend another miserable, minimum 7 days- 200 miles away from home. doing nothing I love…. Sorry for the drama, just venting a bit there.

  5. I love what I do, but that was not always the case. I don’t know how this sounds, but I love making money, but I only make it when I’m doing things for others. I love being productive.

  6. I’m a 7+. Love what I’m doing writing, speaking, promoting books, talking to groups, enjoying my children and grandchild. I’m 68 with no plans to retire. The speaking/writing gig is too much fun when you get to share so much valuable information with others.

  7. I am having fun and I am a 7

I love my life, my wife, and my business.

I am Centered, Grounded, and Enthused daily to charge forward, and conquer the next challenge.
