14 years ago I experienced a personal tragedy that affected me so deeply it took me years to recover. The good news is after I came out of my fog I decided I would become a fearless pursuer of my dreams. That decision lead me to a lifestyle most people only see in movies. I’m not boasting, because this is possible for anyone who decides to make it happen. The secret is to stop caring about what other people think about your dreams. Psychologists call it “approval addiction”, and many mental health experts agree it’s the most debilitating and destructive of all addictions. I agree 100%. The upside is once you overcome it to any significant degree, you are free of the psychological chains that bind most people from ever experiencing world-class success. This is possible for all of us. It’s most likely the one major obstacle holding us back from living our dreams. I challenge every member of this mental toughness community to let go of any level of this addiction you may have. It was the single most important change I’ve ever made in my life, and I think it will be the same for you. Listen to this post and leave your comment. You’ve heard what i think, now it’s your turn. Stand up and be counted! This is your first challenge of 2010!   Happy New Year, everyone!  It’s going to be the best year of our lives!    Steve Siebold

  1. To All,

Perhaps the lyrics of ‘Defying Gravity’ from “Wicked” will help inspire all of us in the New Year.

Something has changed within me, something is not the same
I’m through with playing by the rules of someone else’s game
Too late for second-guessing too late to go back to sleep
It’s time to trust my instincts close my eyes and leap!

    It’s time to try
    Defying gravity
    I think I’ll try
    Defying gravity
Kiss me goodbye, I’m defying gravity
and you can’t pull me down!

I’m through accepting limits ’cause someone says they’re so
Some things I cannot change but till I try, I’ll never know!
Too long I’ve been afraid of losing love I guess I’ve lost
Well, if that’s love it comes at much too high a cost!

    I’d sooner buy
    Defying gravity
    Kiss me goodbye
    I’m defying gravity
I think I’ll fly defying gravity
And you won’t bring me down

Blessings and Be Well to all…

PS/ The cast of “Glee” does a great job on this. It’s available on Amazon for $1.29. A small price to pay for the inspiration. 😉

  2. Hi Steve,
First off I want to tell you how grateful I am for your “177” book and audio, as well as a live seminar I flew down to L.A. for. That propelled me last year to embark on my journey of growth and personal development.

You are bang on when you talked about not being addicted to the approval of others. One thought which has shifted me into a new paradigm, has been to take responsibility for every area of my life. Once we do that, everyone’s opinion loses weight with us, because we know who is totally, 100% responsible for our destiny.

What an exciting life we live in once we discover it is one we can create. Your goal to raise the awareness of others, by teaching the belief system of the World Class is greatly appreciated.

  3. Great post, Steve.

I, too, plan to be more mentally tough in 2010. It is the best gift I can give myself and my family, as I truly believe mental toughness is the key to achieving any goal. Its great to read your material, so keep up the great work!

    Happy 2010!

  4. Steve says many times in his post it’s not to motivate people. This is the time of year millions of resolutions are made – for example going to the gym and working out – and by March millions of resolutions will have been short lived and dropped.

It’s easy to be inspired, easy to nod in agreement when someone says something we understand and agree with, easy to turn a platitude into a pat on the back and proclaim CHANGE.

BUT what makes it stick? What makes it last? What makes it real?

    Thoughts?

    Mike

  5. Perhaps one of the deepest addictions I’ve faced is SELF approval addiction. Get out of that pattern and the world changes, too.

    Love always,

    Sally

  6. Hi Steve. Thanks for your edifying blog. 2009 was the year I “met” you and mental toughness when I got your books. I look forward to an exceptional year and to participate in one of your seminars.

Thanks and happy new year from a friend in Copenhagen!

  7. Hi Stevo, its New years day and yours is the first voice I have listened to on this epic new year. As always your thoughts are almost an echo of mine. however 2009 was an eye opener for me. I had reached first base camp in climbing the everest of my dreams and hit a brick wall. I made plan, Jeez how I made plans, but failed to take action on those plans. I knew what to do but did not do what I knew. last night (New years Eve) I broke away from an addiction which was a nice comfortable haven keeping me safe and warm in my comfort zone. it was like someone just turned on the lights. some piddling little belief I have harboured for so many years, a belief I did not seek but had programmed into me early on in life was preventing me from believing I could go further. I had spent the year advising others how to live there dreams while I was still asleep on my own. Today the road is clear. your advice has resonated into my thinking and I am on a new track. We all have mentors and guides in our lives. You are one who has the balls to tell it like it is so Bless you Stevo, May your success be an inspiration to all procrastinators and people who feel unable to move ahead in their lives. I hope to meet you this year .cheers to you and Dawn John E Regan

  8. Steve,

I absolutely LOVE what you have said/given to us on this New Year’s Eve blog! I recently read Julie Hadden’s new book, Fat Chance. In it she makes the statement (to and for herself) “I DESERVE to live the life of my dreams”.

I think, many times, we are guilty (I know I have been) of thinking of ourselves as unworthy or inadequate–“not enough”. I plan, with all seriousness, to take your great advice in 2010–to become crystal clear of my goals, and to live them–one step at a time.

THANK YOU for the gift in your message!

    Happy New year!!

  10. Thank you Steve, I love the blog. I know how debilitating it has been for me seek the approval of others. I’ve missed on so many opportunities. This is just what I needed to hear in this moment.

  11. That’s a powerful final post for 2009, Steve.

Most defining moments and critical changes in a person’s life are born out of tragedy, hitting rock bottom or a serious dead-end of some kind, or anguish. I’ve got a personal story about that.

Deciding to become self-assured and unwilling to be swayed by skeptics and doubters – not smug and closed minded – is one of the most defining life changing decisions a person can make.

Your entire post is a concentrated lesson in critical decision making, Steve, and what’s missing lots of times is what you did when you were deciding to change your life – you began to create your future outcomes by making it crystal clear to yurself what you wanted out of life and why.

    See you in 2010.

    Mike

  12. Steve,

Thank you for the message as I am preparing for a great 2010 I just realize that I need to stop the addiction of what people may thing and move foward. 2010 get to be the year where I become more mltally tough and live my dreams.

    Thanks.

  13. I SUFFERED WITH ‘APPROVAL ADDICTION’ FOR YEARS AND HAVE BEEN WORKING ON OVERCOMING THIS ADDICTION. I HAVE COME ALONG WAY AND MADE A DECISION THAT 2010 WILL BE THE BEST YEAR OF MY LIFE.
    THANK YOU

  14. Steve,
Happy New Year!! You are right on target. I know you have to set goals and stick with them. Do something everyday to pursue your goals and dreams in life. What people think ofme is none of my business anyway.
Keep you the good work and have a great year.
